The book was the first commentary of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in English, and it is written by experts from several EU Member States. Each chapter focuses on one article of the Charter, summarising how the Charter article impacts upon EU, domestic and international law. This authoritative text has been described as the ‘bible’ on the Charter and, given that the Charter is grounded on the European Convention on Human Rights, the Commentary is also packed with up-to-date case law from the European Court of Human Rights as well as Council of Europe and other guidance.
Debbie is the author of the chapters on Article 13 (the freedom of arts, science & education) and Article 48 (the presumption of innocence & rights of the defence). Debbie was also asked to write the right to a fair trial section in the co-authored chapter on Article 47 which covers the right to an effective remedy and to a fair trial. This is one of the most relied upon rights.
Debbie’s contributions to this new text build on her existing, notable work in the field of access to justice and human rights at European level.
