Sarah Gabriel named in The Lawyer Hot 100 2025
Sarah Gabriel has been recognized in The Lawyer Hot 100 2025, an annual list that celebrates excellence in the legal profession and highlights the brightest legal minds of today.
The Lawyer points to Sarah’s pivotal role in the landmark case Republic of Mozambique v Credit Suisse, Privinvest, VTB Capital, and others, noting that 2024 saw the “victorious conclusion of a career-defining case” for her. As lead partner in the high-profile Tuna Bonds litigation for the Government of Mozambique, Sarah guided the case to a significant victory, with billions of dollars at stake for the impoverished country, embroiled in a corruption scandal with alleged ties to top government officials.
The case stands as a rare, once-in-a-generation piece of litigation. Dubbed “bribery on an industrial scale,” it was named one of The Lawyer’s Top 20 Cases of 2023. The case involved over 10 law firms and more than 40 barristers.
The long-awaited judgment, delivered by Mr. Justice Robin Knowles in July 2024, marked a major milestone after five years of litigation. Initiated by the Attorney General of Mozambique, the case sought to hold the Privinvest Group and its late owner, Mr. Iskandar Safa, accountable for their alleged corruption of the former Minister of Finance, Manuel Chang. The judgment upheld the Republic’s claims and awarded approximately $2 billion in damages and indemnities, and costs on an indemnity basis. The Lawyer highlights how, after years of preparation and satellite litigation, Sarah and her team secured out-of-court settlements with Credit Suisse and VTB before Mozambique’s court victory.
After topping the charts in 2021 for having the highest number of Hot 100-listed individuals per lawyer at the firm, Sarah now joins the ranks of Peters & Peters partners previously recognized by The Lawyer.
