Peters & Peters

Peters & Peters shortlisted in two categories at The Lawyer Awards 2025

We are pleased to announce that we have been shortlisted in two categories at The Lawyer Awards 2025: ‘Team of the Year: Litigation‘ and ‘Pro Bono Initiative of the Year.’

The nomination for ‘Team of the Year: Litigation‘ is a testament to the firm’s outstanding legal and technical expertise, as well as its strategic capabilities in managing complex, cross-jurisdictional challenges. A notable highlight of our litigation efforts in 2024 was the pivotal role we played in the Republic of Mozambique v Credit Suisse, Privinvest, VTB Capital, and others, widely known as the ‘hidden debts’ or ‘tuna bonds’ scandal. This landmark litigation represents a once-in-a-generation legal battle with far-reaching implications for sovereign finance, international banking and corporate accountability. The judgment, delivered in 2024, marked a significant victory for the Republic of Mozambique before the Commercial Court, reaffirming the country’s decision to seek justice in London and setting a precedent for sovereign legal claims.

The impact of this case extends beyond the courtroom, shaping global discussions around transparency, governance, and the rule of law. It underscores Peters & Peters’ leadership in navigating complex legal landscapes and its capacity to handle intricate government relations and international legal processes.

Equally, our shortlisting for ‘Pro Bono Initiative of the Year‘ highlights our firm’s unwavering commitment to social responsibility and using the law as a force for positive change. Our pro bono efforts, spearheaded by Senior Associate Joseph Duggin in collaboration with The Howard League for Penal Reform, reflect our dedication to empowering vulnerable communities and making a lasting difference.

In response to significant legislative changes concerning Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentences, Peters & Peters partnered with the Howard League to launch a dedicated hotline offering tailored, clear legal advice to individuals affected by these changes. This initiative addressed the complexity of new laws and ensured that those serving IPP and Determinate Public Protection (DPP) sentences, along with their families, understood their rights. Over the course of 11 weeks, volunteers contributed 260 hours, advising over 150 individuals and identifying systemic barriers to justice. This vital service was widely recognized, with the Parole Board endorsing the hotline and the media acknowledging its far-reaching impact. Described as a “lifeline” by the United Group for Reform of IPP (UNGRIPP), a leading campaigning organization, the hotline demonstrated our firm’s commitment to providing meaningful legal support to vulnerable individuals.

We are delighted to have been shortlisted in both categories at the upcoming awards ceremony, which will be held on 17 June 2025. The full shortlist can be found here here.
