NGO challenges Shell’s climate protection claims

Share

Key facts:

The NGO Environmental Action Germany (Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH)) filed a claim against Shell complaining of various advertising statements. These included claims that Shell’s motor oil was “CO2 neutral” and that it supported CO2 offset through a scheme where motorists could choose to pay a small premium on Shell fuel which would be directed to climate protection projects.

DUH alleges that Shell has failed to provide sufficient information or evidence to back up its claims, and that any compensation through the purchase of carbon credits for Shell’s chosen climate protection projects would be insufficient to offset emissions.
